Robotic Surgery Q & A
What is minimally invasive surgery using the state-of-the-art da Vinci® Surgical System Xi?
We are pleased to offer Minimally Invasive Surgery using the state-of-the-art da Vinci® Surgical System Xi. This robotically assisted gastric sleeve allows your doctor to perform the surgery using only a few small incisions with enhanced vision, precision, and control. In the expert hands of our surgeons, this groundbreaking technology offers an advanced alternative to open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, with benefits such as:
- Significantly less pain and discomfort
- Less blood loss
- Smaller incisions with minimal scarring and reduced risk of infection
- Shorter recovery time and return to normal daily life
- In many cases, better clinical outcomes
What are the advantages of robotic surgery?
Utilizing a robotic surgery system also offers many advantages for surgeons:
- An Enhanced Visual Field
- Superior Dexterity
- Much Greater Precision
How are robot-assisted surgeries performed?
Robotic surgery, also referred to as robot-assisted surgery, is precise, minimally invasive, and laparoscopic (only needs small incisions). Robotically assisted gastric sleeve allows the doctor to perform the surgery using only a few small incisions with enhanced vision, precision, and control. These robots have immense dexterity, which grants the surgeon the ability to operate in confined spaces of the body – even some areas that might otherwise be unreachable – without the need for open surgery.
“Open surgery” refers to traditional surgery, which requires long incisions and can lead to more pain, additional recovery time, and more scarring than laparoscopic incisions.
What happens during the surgery?
- The surgeon uses a computer console located in the operating room to control tiny instruments, which are
- mounted on three robotic arms.
- A 3D camera is attached to a fourth robotic arm. This camera magnifies the surgical site.
- The robotic arms are controlled by the surgeon’s hand, wrist, and finger movements.
- These movements are transmitted to the instruments which are attached to the robot.
- The robot’s arms mimic the movements of the surgeon’s hands, with the same range of motion to ensure the
- The highest level of control.
- At the patient’s bedside, the surgical team stands by to supervise the robot’s movements.
What risks and considerations are related to bariatric surgery?
Includes gastric bypass (stomach reduction surgery), sleeve gastrectomy and duodenal switch): leaking and/ or narrowing at the spot where two parts of the bowel were reconnected, leaking from where the bowel is cut, malnutrition, dumping syndrome (food moves too quickly into the small intestine), dehydration, need for supplementation of vitamins, minerals, and protein. Contraindications to endoscopic surgery include morbid obesity.
Important Information for Patients:
Serious complications may occur in any surgery, including da Vinci® Surgery, up to and including death. Risks include, but are not limited to injury to tissues and organs and conversion to other surgical techniques. If your doctor needs to convert the surgery to another surgical technique, this could result in a longer operative time, additional time under anesthesia, additional or larger incisions, and/or increased complications. Individual surgical results may vary. Patients who are not candidates for non-robotic minimally invasive surgery are also not candidates for da Vinci Surgery. Patients should talk to their doctor to decide if da Vinci Surgery is right for them. Patients and doctors should review all available information on non-surgical and surgical options in order to make an informed decision.
